Corey Taylor Starts A New Record Label
![]() |
Hardly words that inspire the independent musician to cry with joy, but another record label has been established by Corey Taylor, of Slipknot fame. Great Big Mouth Records even has their first act lined up and ready to go in the shape of local Iowa band Facecage. The aim of the record label, according to Taylor, is to promote bands local to the Iowa region and bring a little unity to the local music scene. He goes on to state that record labels are dubious about traveling to the Midwest because there are no direct flights. As such, there are a lot of really good bands waiting to be discovered. That’s where Taylor and his label step in to take over and lend a helping hand. While we would certainly agree that there are doubtless plenty of good bands in the Midwest it remains to be seen whether Great Big Mouth Records will go the same way as many other labels – to the bank with their artist’s money.

This is no surprise to me and should not be a surprise to anyone else for that fact. More and more people or bands are starting independent labels thus giving them the opportunity to be more open and express more in their music without the threat of label. So I am glad to see that people are not afraid to do what they have to in order to make their dreams a reality.

I am all for bringing unity to the local music scene. So many artists have to stifle their creativity when signed onto a major label. Others don’t even get the chance to have their music heard. I hope this works out and doesn’t turn out to be a ” take the money and run” type of thing.

I heartily agree with lalajean; the big corporations have made a big mess of things as far as promoting, nurturing, and creating true talent, and in my view, limit audiences to what the bean counters want people to believe is “popular.” Maybe starting new labels will give artists a better chance to thrive creatively without having to give in to the major record labels…even though this isn’t exactly a new idea.

It is the opposite of the old saying, “If you can’t join them beat them.” That is what these independent labels are trying to do, which I think is great. We would miss out on some wonderful music if all the good bands sat around waiting for that one popular label to sign them; “Go out, Start your own!” I’m also a fan of Slipknot.

Kudos to you for mentioning that the corporations have made a mess of the music industry. I think that with commercialization of music it takes away from what they are really want to write about in order to appease the record companies mind and what people will want to see in videos.
This allows for people to be themselves, write about what is really happening in the world and trying to help make a difference today.

Commercialization kills music. I can’t stand listening to commercial radio anymore because you are hearing what the corporations want you to hear, and songs that are just completely horrible and forced into your ears with redundant air play over and over.
