Gregory and the Hawk

Gregory-and-the-hawk ReviewWait a minute! Is someone really playing folk music and recording it live? Nice!!!!! Is someone really recording pop/acoustic, with no apologies for the softness of the vocals and no need to growl at the audience? Again – nice!!!!!

Gregory and the Hawk is, primarily, Meredith Godreau on guitar and vocals. Jeff Ratner, on bass, assists her at various times. Michael McGuire, Susan Ambrose and Adam Christgau are on the recordings (piano, vocals, flute, drums). Much of what Godreau offers is based on poetic lyrics that, unlike some current music, are as much a part of the song as the crystal-clear acoustic guitar. “One by one the days fall beside us like yellow leaves…” (from “Season Poem”). Who writes like that anymore? Godreau does.

Gregory and the Hawk has announced the full-length CD In Your Dreams (on the Pearly Gates label). The songs were self-recorded and will be released by the “new collective of industry minded folks” in around New York. The “group” was created by Godreau, using her brother’s name and a hawk from his imagination. Early distribution of demos started from the bedroom of the vocalist and, in about three years, she built a loyal fan base for her “lo-fi” music. Godreau is from upstate New York.
