Canon
Not too many current musical groups cite King Crimson as a musical influence. Actually, none have, until Canon. This may be because the current crop of young musicians wasn’t around when In The Court of the Crimson King was a favorite. If mom and dad didn’t keep those vinyls around, it would difficult to truly be influenced King Crimson. Fortunately, a few young musicians do know quality when they hear it.
This Hollywood-based group also cites rock legends Yes and Jethro Tull as influences. With that type of focus, how could the music by anything but good? The tunes, in fact, are pretty good, with Jason Turbin providing the lead vocals and the keyboards. The strength of the keyboard in Canon music should be no surprise to those familiar with the three major groups mentioned earlier. All three used piano and electronic keyboard to create.
But Canon includes Benji Pope on bass, Cassidy Turbin on drums and Tieg Johnson on guitar. While Turbin seems to be the major contributor to Canon’s effort, the other musicians should not be categorized as backup workers. The construction of songs such as "Euromatic" and "S O S" (Wide Awake 111 Records 2008) has far more content than one person could contribute. "Don’t Trust the Teachers" is not a new-concept song, but it is interesting nonetheless.

They have some very interesting sounds. I am already loving these young group. I like everything that I can hear so far on their Mypace page.
Do they only have one album out now? If they have more than one, which do you recommend? I’d really like to hear more of their stuff.

I like the website design on Myspace. I think this will have a factor on them becoming a well known figure in the music industry. The only thing that I could say is to grow their friends because their friends will help them become more popular. I can see that they don’t have a banner yet on their site. They only have one video on their space, putting some more video will make their page become more attractive.

Myspace is definitely a great marketing tool, but the music also speaks for itself. These guys are awesome. It’s kind of cool they mention King Crimson as an influence. I’ve always liked that band even though they are before my time. Then again most the greats are before my time, but music will always live on.
Anyways, I love the keyboard work, love the vocals, and love the lyrics. SOS is short, sweet, and brilliant, but my favorite is definitely Master. The vocals are brilliant.

Personally, I would have to say that “Don’t Trust the Teachers” is my personal pick. Frankly, I thought I might not like this group’s songs or style at all, but I decided to check out their MySpace page and listen to the samples.
What I like, stylewise, is the fact that Canon conveys emotions well without resorting to angry screaming or yelling. They do well when they express cynicism or sarcasm without being “in your face” about it.
Musically, they are good in harmony, contrasts in timbre and tempo, and the use of lead vocals with the keyboards.
