Well I like the development of progressive rock a lot, listening to this kind of music makes my day complete. This is some interesting facts about music history and I was shocked when i saw blonde's name, I never thought that she is an indie also. anyway, let's just hope that old music will not die and be forgotten.

Funny how things often work out, destiny-wise. A group of artists decides to create their own label, it succeeds, nurtures a crop of new artists in new genres, then becomes a subsidiary of a big label later.

Same thing happens in Hollywood. The best example I can think of is George Lucas, who started out as a rebellious filmmaker who didn't like the studio system yet needed it to release his movies, then became the head of his own multi-media empire.

The Reprise label does still exist and is owned by Warner. Though it's no longer what you would call a small label, they hold various artists including Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Morissette and even Adam Sandler. :p

New music genres in a way came from indie at one time or another. Where else can you find music not molded to the popular trend in music.

The interesting thing, though (and it's been mentioned in similar threads on this topic) is that the whole concept of do-it-yourself, or at least away from "major" labels DIY, was a consequence of a bid by Frank Sinatra to have more independence from Capitol Records in the early 1960s. He and several other singers who were unhappy with the stifling practices of the major record companies got together and formed Reprise. I believe this label still exists as a subsidiary of Warner Records; if anyone has updated information I wouldn't mind being corrected.

Indie music gained its freespiritedness and strident anti-commercialism and non-mainstream attitudes and philosophies in direct lineage to the DIY ethic of punk and 1980s alternative rock such as The Pixies and Sonic Youth, while simultaneously exploring broader song structures, lyrics, and instrumentation to which major labels and corporate distributors might have been more averse. Since then it has skyrocketed

yes, i think i would consider indie in the blondie category. and you are right attagirl, it has really changed. and i think that the change was really big. and became more and more wonderful. if we would compare it with our music now, we will see the big change on it.

You know I never really thought of Blondie as Indie either, but now that it has been mentioned and I think of the style and dress and how she was different then I would put her there in that category. I think you are right about when you here it the first time around. With this said, you can watch and see how the indie scene changed over the years just like all other genre's.

For some reason I'd never thought of Blondie as indie - did se get signed by a big label very quickly? I think that the indie music of the 70s was a far higher quality than a lot of the other stuff that got churned out then - but perhaps that's just the hindsight of not hearing it first time around, and only learning about it from recommendations from that era.

Very interesting information provided here for the 70's when disco was the king. Where did the indy scene come from and what started it in this era that would have been an indication that it existed? How can you tell the difference.
