A Life of Science

A Life of ScienceA first time visitor to spaces and places frequented by this group might be a bit bemused, even a little frightened. After all, there is something about the use of an acetylene torch on a human subject. (They’re just kidding, I hope.)
The pseudo-medical graphics fit rather well with the professional presentation of this indie-rock/electronic style group. “Barnacles of Time” has a mellow, tuneful start that heads into something with a bit more of an edge. But the song holds its strength throughout.
This listener particularly likes the start of “Onward, Submarine!” But listeners will have to be fans of things a bit more screamo oriented to catch on to some parts of the song. Nice drums and guitar, though. These guys can play. If you have any doubts, check out “Carving a Canyon.”
I would suppose the song “The Apneist” would be a title tune, or perhaps just a title, since this is more than a CD and more than a song. The Apneist “is a concept album,” according to the group’s Web site. But these interesting and creative folks have plans for “a comic book, film, novel and more” in this theme. The ultimate goal might be a new world altogether. We shall see.
By the way, apneists are people who can hold their breath for extended periods of time. This has been useful for free-divers who may descend hundreds of feet without breathing apparatus. Nice concept for this band.
