Feral Children
Once you get past this fascinating name, you find an experimental/rock group that is, by most accounts, pushing the boundaries of current indie music. “Jaundice Giraffe” from Second to the Last Frontier (Sarathan Records) has a rather frightening feel, with its “wee ooo” background and spoken vocal line. There’s a bit of screamo involved as well, but it’s nothing like the real screamo/growl bands making the rounds today. This is psychological stuff with sound effects!
“Zyghost” is for real. Just listen.
Here’s what some others have said: “not faking it,” “burning and manic,” “dark, unsettling.” This writer particularly likes “SpyGlass House.” Some reviewers have called Feral Children’s music “hymnal.” That is very close, because these fellows have a religious devotion to preaching about the truly unsettling society that we have constructed over the last couple of centuries.
In spite of the other-world sound and philosophy, the band is composed of some real guys – Bill Cole…Jim Cotton…Josh Gamble…Jeff Keenan…Sergey Posrednikov – who will be playing some dates in Oregon and Washington this summer. The difference may be that some of these guys are as close to feral children as you can get in our society. One review of a live show says it is difficult to listen to this music without having a visceral response.
That is right on the mark.

Feral Children’s album is awesome. i got their EP for free at the label website a few weeks ago and just picked up the full length yesterday…and it’s VERY impressive. if you’re into the crazier stuff animal collective or liars puts out, pick this up now.
first off, the name is really great. i like this band name. i really think that they did great on the music Jaundice Giraffe. they are very unique and they know how to make people listen and remember their songs. this band is great!
While they have a great name, their music puts a picture in my head that I don’t agree with. It made me think of a bunch of goth kids running around. I agree, the music is dark, and unsettling. This one isn’t going on my favorites, or the ipod.
Feral Children, Leeuh, not only brings to mind disturbing images with their music, especially when they sing falsetto in “SpyGlass House,” but the band’s name evokes animalistic kids living out in the jungles of Africa or South Asia, feeding on corpses, carrion, and whatnot. Yuck.
They do seem rather altruistic, though, since they do sing at benefit concerts. Still, this is NOT my cup of musical tea…I prefer the Watson Twins, if truth be told.
well, you are both not into this band Fardreamer and Leeuh.=) many people like you does not really appreciate music like this. and you can just call it a noise. i like the band but i also do not like some of their songs, i find it so disturbing in the ears. but i can still appreciate some of their songs.
