Joe Nolan Band

Joe Nolan BandMaking the move from day labor to singing and writing songs is a release that many have tried, if only for the wonderful feeling of freedom. It remains to be seen with the Joe Nolan Band, which got a nice reception at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival last year.

Being so young has raised a few questions about an 18-year-old moving to Toronto to pursue a career, according to a media source called Penguin Eggs Magazine. Nolan does his work with close friend “guitar” and brings his major influence “the wind” to such songs as “Winter’s on its Way” He will spend his summer and fall of 2009 moving about his native Alberta, Canada, playing folk festivals, music festivals and other assorted gatherings.

He also brings much of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Neil Young to his work, three legends he cites as major influences. There is a particular feel to “Sitting Stone” that belies Nolan’s youth. This listener had to check out “Dandelion” a couple of times, since this is a fascinating weed/flower that has provided content for rock ballads before. Nolan does a nice job with it on this tune.

It is good that he is young and can remember, since he tells interviewers that he doesn’t write down lyrics or any other part of his songs. Hope he keeps remembering.
