Justin BlomgrenWhile the first sounds you hear on the MySpace site of Justin Blomgren might be a bit different from what you’d expect, that doesn’t mean it is unpleasant. Some of this music borders on country/bluegrass, but there is a new-age feel to it as well, especially when the tunes venture into instrumental/keyboard work.

This listener was surprised to see the names Kogon & Blomgren, a duet from Rhinebeck, New York that includes Blomgren and Sam Kogon. But then again, this isn’t unpleasant at all. “Isadora Sunrise” is a wonderful instrumental experience, for example. Much of what is available from Blomgren is presented as samples, so it’s hard to get a real feel for what he can do over an extended period.

“Far From Me” is a fine keyboard-based instrumental. Kogon & Blomgren cover Tom Petty’s hit song “Free Fall’n” and do a respectable job. The melody and vocal range fit the singers well. However, the focus with this version is on being soft, while Petty’s original song had a definite edge that is missing here.

Here’s a bit of what the guys say about starting down their musical-duo road: They got together to sing some songs and see if anyone would listen. This turned into a CD. Now they are trying to get more people to listen. They haven’t made it yet, but there is always the chance.
