Salme Dahlstrom

Billing herself as “the acid cowgirl” Salme Dahlstrom reportedly doesn’t give a shit about following trends or staying with conventional sound. She is variously heard as a driving, dance-beat type of performer and an artist with a wide range of influences.
Whatever it is she is doing, it works for some judges. She did receive an honorable mention in the International Songwriting Competition and a similar award from the Billboard World Song Contest. That’s something. This listener likes the “welcome to wherever you are sound” that Dahlstrom puts out. She was also a finalist in the Dance Electronica category in Song of the Year competition.
Her latest CD is The Acid Cowgirl Audio Trade (Kontainer Music 2008). Many would-be fans will be drawn to this performer because she rides a Harley Softail and self-produced her latest CD in her own New York studio. She moved to the United States from Sweden, where in her youth she studied classical music. The soul-deep ability comes through, with sharpness and a Bohemian feel. It’s likable.
The latest effort from Dahlstrom continues the quality found on Bible Bombastik from 2006. The album mix for “Wearing The Peace” is nice studio mixing of music, talk-over vocals and dance beat. If you are almost six feet tall, blonde and talented, you should be able to catch the fan’s attention. Seems Dahlstrom does that.

Her beats are interesting, and definitely not the norm. That is a welcome change with all the sheep in music these days. But, I don’t like the lyrics. They don’t sound all the original to me (example: Why you wanna trip on me/I’m wearing the beats/So come on will you come with me).
I don’t think it’s fair to say that Salme Dahlstrom owes all the attention she gets just to being tall, blonde and from Sweden. I feel she’s bringing smething new to the scene, and I’m betting we’ll hear from her in the future too.
Oh I think she is capable of being original with her songs. (example: Little boys don’t know why They were born with dirty minds It’s all because god likes sex) Not the kind of lyrics that appeal to most perhaps.
I haven’t seen much Indie artists on this genre and she certainly is Indie , I mean how many artists decline big label offers and go independent.

Hey dude,
it’s not
wearing the BEATS, it’s wearing the PEACE…Salme’s lyrics are really cool, I think. You can appreciate them on several levels; just as a hooky sing-a long or on a more philosophical level. And she’s got attitude which I like.
It’s likable sure but I can’t shake the idea that she is very similar to the artist Pink. I wasn’t too fond of the repetitive beats that were in each, track two or three times is enough. She has pop potential because her sound it a bit bubblegum and the lyrics are seemingly catchy. It reminds me of the stuff that you would hear on the popular music radio stations that gets repeated over and over until you are forced into knowing it. For me, not worth another look, but I can see a possible pop future for her.
Well, I have to admit I’m always impressed with an artist willing to stretch the boundaries of the music genres. She is a pretty good songwriter as proven by the contests she won and for me she just has an OK voice, but combine the two with a catchy tune and the results are quite nice. Her music videos are also good considering they’re self produced and I hope we keep hearing more music from her.
