Is this The Beatles, The Stones, The Dave Clark Five – back from the early 1960s? How about The Spencer Davis Group with a young Steve Winwood?

“Believe In Me” (Parallel Play 2008 Murderecords) has some of that flavor, most certainly. This tune from the Toronto group has straightforward rock rhythm, lyrics that are not complex and keyboards that tie the whole thing together. When this talented band moves on to “Witch’s Wand” from the same CD, the listener may be transported once again, to the days of youth and bicycles. Is that a Beach Boys influence on the backup vocals? Sure it is.

The lineup of musicians includes Jay Ferguson, Chris Murphy, Patrick Pentland, Andrew Scott and they want us to know “I’m Not A Kid Anymore.” Well, boys, we certainly get that. As with most of their other tunes, this is perfect length for those FM stations that tend toward the old three-minute tune. Some bands can use all of those classic groups as influences and make it their own. Sloan has done this with Parallel Play. For example, with “Emergency 911″ – hey boys, how do you reproduce all of these different styles? As someone once asked Bob Dylan – where does it all come from?

Sloan will be in Detroit, Philadelphia, D.C. Boston, New York, Cleveland and Chicago, with a tour beginning June 14.

Wow, I love this! I can see how these guys can be related to the early Beatles. Believe in Me has that tone, that sound, that people just enjoy. Call me old fashioned, but I wish that more bands sounded like this rather than the punkish garbage that comes up constantly. This is a winner of a band, and I’m happy to find one I can finally thoroughly enjoy.

Have to agree, this band really caught and kept my attention. The great combination of music style and lyrics definately had me thinking of the Beatles, but then again songs such as Believe in Me leaves that sweet music in your ear.

I enjoy how they have fun with the music and take you back a few years to childhood. I think that is what good music should be about. Taking you to places you have not been in a while. They will go far, I am sure.

Very nice ! “I’m Not a Kid Anymore” definitely has some grown up instrumentals going on there, and reminds me of a time when music was great, even though it was way before my time. You can definitely hear The Rolling Stones and Beatles influence, but it is not so blatant that it sounds like they are trying to be just like them. They bring their own style to the table as well. “Believe In Me” is such a simple and happy tune, but I find myself listening to it over and over. Thanks for advertising this band. You have just given these guys a new fan.

These guys want to go to olden era and they have really done it very well. I think they should also be a little slow because the tempo of their music is slightly fast than their theme. Or may be they are trying to change the theme and want to present a new theme. Whatever these guys have gelled well and have come up with good music.
