Spoon

Indie Artist SpoonThough Spoon has been around since 1994, they really started to take off as the industry started to change. Prior to the popularity of social networking sites like MySpace, it was harder to develop a fan base unless you were part of a mainstream label. By touring and gaining fans from the internet, Spoon started to increase in popularity.

They’ve had a prolific 12+ years. Seven albums, four EP’s and at least 18 singles show how the band has evolved. They chose their name in honor of Can which is a 70’s German band’s hit song which was called “Spoon.” They were influenced by bands such as Guiding Voices, Nirvana, Pixies, Wire, and Yo La Tenga. Their latest album, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, released on the Merge label reached #10 in the United States.

This Austin, Texas band features Britt Daniel on vocals and guitar, Jim Eno on drums, Rob Pope on bass, and Eric Harvey on keyboards, backing vocals, percussion, and guitar. Prior to signing with Merge, Spoon had a contract with both Matador Records and then Elektra. Elektra dropped the contract and Spoon signed with Merge. (Elektra is now defunct). They’ve released two albums with merge and seem pretty happy with them.

Spoon is a great “local” band. They are not out there as much as they were, yet they still rock to me. I have seen Spoon in concert and they put on a good show, usually in a small venue atmosphere. There music, a few cold beers and plenty of friends makes for one hell of a night out.

I saw them a while back in Austin, and I really enjoyed the show. It was laid back with a quite a few local followers. You can tell these guys have been around together for quite some time. They play like veterans, and have some great tunes as well. I especially like “They Never Got You”; very upbeat with great vocals.

Spoon is one of the best if not the best indie rock band around at this time.If you listen to even just any one of their songs you would realize what a really good songwriter and singer Britt Daniel is. I find it really sad that in 12 years of creating great rock music they are still not that well known today. But I guess that’s one obstacle you face being an indie artist. If your’e a first itme listener, try “Everything Hits at Once” from their Girls Can Tell album.
