Ulysses Campbell

ulysses-campbellWell, first of all, this young fellow from New Hampshire states without hesitation that labels are for suckers! That’s a good start in the music business today, at least for a huge number of fans and artists. Zachary Ulysses Campbell Wilson, a.k.a. Ulysses Campbell, takes care of the sounds on the tunes, with “mouth, strings, hands, old computers, keys.” With influences as diverse, yet consistent, as Entre Rios, Weezy F Baby, Nico, Patrick Wolf etc., this effort will find a certain target audience outside the mainstream.

He calls it “poptronica, electronicawesome or fuckyeahtronica.” OK. Earlier this year, Pop Apocalypse wrote that Falconry, or Storybook Electronica “picks up right where the EP (Color It All) left off.” The tune Star Sound Dinosaur from his upcoming release, “Friday,” starts off in a restrained manner and then….just stays there. It’s rather relaxing music actually. A bit of the electronica shows up more in “To Be Young,” and the rhythm picks up a bit as well. As Pop Apocalypse stated, Wilson has cut back “on the electronics a bit,” on this collection. I disagree with a couple of reviews that call this a “band,” however. This is a one-man, single-artist compilation. Let’s call it that, because, after all, this is about what is going on in the guy’s head.

* Originally we posted Ulysses was from Cape Town, South Africa, while in fact, he was just studying there.

  1. Actually I’m not from South Africa, I’m from New Hampshire. I was studying in South Africa for a number of months. Hellz yeah though, I wish I was South African.

As for the song “Dinosaur Hunting”, I believe that the reviewer may be getting it confused with the song “Star Sound Dinosaur”. The latter has not yet been released, but is available on myspace, and it will be featured on my upcoming album “Friday!”

It’s all good though, I just hope people see this.

    I <3 this album.
It’s beautiful, subtle, intricate, and you can tell the artist doesn’t churn this stuff out quickly. There is much love and care put into his craft and it shows.
